Chapter Four: Chuck

Did that just happen? Did Genie pop back into my life and take a stab at bringing me down…again? Did she just tell Shirley, the woman I’ve fallen for, that I could be her dad?

A few minutes ago, I had everything. But in the blink of an eye, I’ve lost everything all over again.

Running my hands over my dyed brown hair, I sigh of frustration as I stare blankly at the empty space where Shirley last looked back at me.

All I ever wanted was to love someone who genuinely loved me back. Someone I could care for and start a happy family with. There’s no doubt in my mind that Shirley is the one. Before someone else intruded in on our life, age was never a factor in the bond we built so quickly.

Now what? I just let her go and that’s it?

“Shirley needs time,” I mutter aloud to myself.

I’m man enough to respect your wishes. But in the meantime, I’m not letting you go that easily. I’m going to do everything I can to get you back, Shirley. But, how?

I want her, and deep down, I know she wants me too. Whatever I decide needs to be thoughtful, meaningful, something to show her I listen to her and care about every word that leaves her lips.

I drive home with wild thoughts flooding my mind. Entering my house, I pour a glass of Scotch, light a cigar, and sit by my fireplace for a couple of hours in deep thought. There’s a little less than a week until I take Ben to the ranch to pick up his surprise horse and I’ll give Shirley space until then. But on the day I visit the ranch, that’ll be the day I get Shirley back. I’m sure of that.

Night falls and finally, a lightbulb goes off in my head.

“I’ve got it,” I say aloud and my voice bounces off the empty walls in my house.

Picking up the phone, I search the internet until I find a local construction company and dial the first number I see.

“Hello? I need a contractor for a fast project. I’ll pay whatever they need to finalize this project in five days.”
